• Kaziranga National Park, a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to nearly 70% of the world's one-horned rhinoceroses. Yet the Assam Government is reportedly seeking to reduce Kaziranga's eco-sensitive zone by 90%, opening protected areas to mining, construction, and infrastructure projects.


• At the same time, around 45 Adivasi families have been evicted from agricultural land bordering Kaziranga. The families say they hold tax records and other documents asserting their rights to the land. The disputed land is now being developed for a luxury five-star resort proposed in partnership with the Assam Government and associated with the Hyatt brand.


• The project has also raised concerns about the silencing of those defending the land and surrounding ecology. Pranab Doley, an activist opposing the project and supporting the affected families, was arrested and granted bail, and was then detained again under the National Security Act, which permits detention without trial for extended periods. The controversy raises a fundamental question: can development come at the cost of Indigenous communities, wildlife corridors, and the people defending them?
